More Than a Weekly Horseback Riding Lesson

The Pony Gang Homeschool Riding & Horsemanship Program is designed to provide a complete horse-centered learning experience.

Students do more than simply ride a horse. They learn how to communicate with horses, care for them responsibly, understand their behavior, and develop the balance and coordination needed to become thoughtful and capable riders.

Each weekly class near Columbia, SC, includes three connected areas of learning:

Horseback Riding Instruction

Students develop a secure, balanced, and increasingly independent seat through progressive riding instruction.

Lessons focus on:

- Correct riding position

- Balance and coordination

- Confidence in the saddle

-Independent hands and arms

- Proper use of riding aids

- Safe and responsible riding habits

Students progress at their own pace. Reins, steering, and more independent riding activities are introduced only after a student has developed the balance, coordination, and independent hands needed to move forward safely.

Hands-On Horsemanship

Students gain practical experience caring for and working around horses.

Depending on the weekly curriculum, horsemanship activities may include:

- Safely approaching and handling horses

- Leading a horse correctly

- Grooming and preparing a horse

- Learning about saddles, bridles, and equipment

- Basic hoof care and hoof knowledge

- Horse health and daily care

- Stable management

- Safe and responsible barn routines

These activities help students understand the responsibility involved in caring for horses while developing patience, confidence, and practical skills.

Horse Education

Students participate in age-appropriate educational activities that connect horse knowledge with real-life barn experiences.

Topics may include:

- Horse behavior and communication

- Basic equine anatomy

- Horse health and wellness

- Grooming tools and equipment

- Horse and barn safety

- Tack identification

- Hoof care

- Stable management

- Responsible horse ownership

This combination of riding, horsemanship, and education makes the program a valuable hands-on learning opportunity for homeschool families in the Columbia, SC area.

- Focus and problem-solving skills

- Respect for animals and others

- Teamwork and communication

-Perseverance and self-control

Students are encouraged to ask questions, participate actively, and take pride in each new skill they develop.
